Gilts’ UK premium: new leaders, thin headroom, 6% long bonds
Gilts carry a UK premium on top of the global sell-off, and the 28 October Budget decides whether it grows or shrinks.

The 10-year rose about 55bp (4.83% on 14 Apr to 5.38% on 16 Oct) and the 30-year about 43bp (about 5.42% on 9 Apr to about 5.85%, single-source readings), so the long end lagged and 10s30s narrowed. The 10-year gilt–Bund spread is about 196bp, against about 180bp a year ago.

What happened
Gilts sold off with everyone else on energy and hike bets, but they carried a premium of their own too. Supply came first: on 14 April the UK sold a record £15bn 10-year by syndication at 4.9158%, the highest yield on a 10-year sale since 2008. Then politics: Keir Starmer announced his resignation on 22 June, Andy Burnham became prime minister in July, and John Healey replaced Rachel Reeves as Chancellor. The 30-year hit its highest since 1998 in May, first topped 6% on 1 October and peaked at 6.036% on 7 October.
It shows up against peers. The 10-year gilt–Bund spread is about 196bp, against about 180bp a year ago. That widening came even though the gap between Bank Rate and the ECB deposit rate narrowed from 200bp to 125bp, which would normally pull the spread in.
Analysts differ on the cause. Barclays’ numbers suggest the long-end move is mostly global : 30-year gilts rose about 0.6pp from the Spring Forecast against 0.7–1.0pp for comparable sovereigns. Aberdeen sees a structural UK premium.
Higher yields would normally lift the pound. Sterling was around 1.32 on 2 October, near its lowest since 26 June, so analysts read it as a sign yields were rising for the wrong reasons.
The Budget on 28 October tests . The Reuters poll median is about £10–12bn, against £23.6bn in March. KPMG says about £12bn and the IFS about £20–21bn. Higher yields raise debt interest and eat into it, so a weak Budget can feed on itself.
The BoE has eased the supply side. On 17 September it paused its gilt sales for six months and halted long-dated sales, leaving fewer bonds for the market to absorb, and yields fell about 10bp.

What could change it
Base case
Healey rebuilds some headroom while keeping his tax pledges, the BoE hikes on 5 Nov as priced, and the 30-year stays below its 6.036% peak. The gilt–Bund spread drifts rather than snaps.

Fiscal scare
The Budget leaves headroom thin (one estimate is as low as £5bn) or leans on borrowing. Long gilts cheapen back through 6%, the gilt–Bund spread widens and sterling falls with them: yields up for the wrong reasons again.
Watch: Gilt auction (4⅝% 2032), 27 Oct · UK Budget, 28 Oct · BoE, 5 Nov
Relief rally
A credible rebuild towards the £15–16bn economists advise, plus easing global term premium, pulls 30-year yields lower and narrows the gilt–Bund spread.

How desks express it
Gilt–Bund 10y tightener into the Budget
Cross-marketBuy 10y gilts, sell 10y Bunds (DV01-neutral)
A Budget that rebuilds headroom would shrink the UK premium, so gilts should outperform Bunds.
- 1
At about 196bp, the spread is about 16bp wider than a year ago even though the policy-rate gap narrowed by 75bp: a UK premium tied to headroom and politics.
- 2
Healey has pledged to meet the fiscal rules in full, and economists advise rebuilding headroom to about £15–16bn from a poll median of about £10–12bn.
- 3
Barclays’ numbers suggest much of the long-end move is global, so a credible Budget could take out the UK-specific part.
- 4
At the last Budget, in late November 2025, the 30-year fell from a 5.35% open to about 5.23% intraday.
Wrong if: A Budget on 28 Oct that leaves headroom thin (one estimate is as low as £5bn) or adds borrowing widens the spread. A hawkish BoE on 5 Nov against an ECB on hold on 29 Oct would also push gilt yields up relative to Bunds.
UK 10s30s flattener
CurveBuy 30y gilts, sell 10y gilts (DV01-neutral)
With the BoE no longer selling long gilts, the 30-year’s supply premium should keep shrinking relative to the 10-year.
- 1
On 17 Sep the BoE paused gilt sales for six months and halted long-dated sales entirely; yields fell about 10bp.
- 2
Less long-dated supply eases the most at 30 years.
- 3
10s30s has already narrowed from about +68bp on 1 Apr to about +47bp on 16 Oct (single-source readings).
Wrong if: A loose Budget on 28 Oct would hit the long end hardest, and a global long-end sell-off like the one that lifted the 30-year 13bp to 6.036% on 7 Oct would steepen 10s30s.
