From ceasefire hopes to $110 oil: the energy shock spread into inflation, three of the four central banks hiked, and gilts paid a UK premium on top.
Oil swung on the war: Brent topped $126 on 30 April, fell back to pre-war levels after a June deal, then climbed again when that truce collapsed in July, settling at $109.86 on 16 October. Inflation followed and the ECB, BoJ and Fed all hiked, so short-dated yields rose fastest and the US and German curves bear-flattened, even as long yields hit their highest in years. Gilts paid a UK premium on top, from new leaders, thin fiscal headroom and heavy supply. The open question is whether energy spreads into pay and services; the UK Budget on 28 October and four central bank decisions by 5 November are the next tests.
